The Weekend Edit
A Restorative Fourth of July in Western Massachusetts
Every now and then, we all need a few days to step away from our routines.
Not to fill every hour with activities, but to slow down enough to remember what it feels like to wake up without looking at the clock.
This Fourth of July, my husband and I headed to Western Massachusetts for a long weekend. We were looking for fresh air, beautiful scenery, a little adventure, and a chance to recharge.
We found all of it.
A Stop Worth Making: Shelburne Falls
Before arriving at our destination, we made a stop in the charming town of Shelburne Falls.
If you've never visited, it's well worth stretching your legs and wandering through the village. Between the local shops, flower-filled streets, and the famous Bridge of Flowers, it's the kind of place that invites you to slow your pace.
For lunch, we stopped at Hotfire Bar & Grill.
Two sandwiches stood out.
The Smashburger was exactly what you'd hope for: simple, flavorful, and perfectly cooked.
The Black Forest sandwich was equally memorable and one I'd happily order again. The owner told my husband one of the reasons he opened the restaurant was to recreate this sandwich he couldn’t get anymore!
Sometimes the best travel recommendations are the unexpected ones.
Finding Our Reset at Hinata Retreat
From there, we continued on to Hinata Retreat.
From the moment we arrived, it was clear this wasn't just another place to stay.
The setting encourages you to slow down.
We spent time hiking the nearby trails, enjoying the quiet surroundings, and appreciating how refreshing it felt to disconnect from everyday life for a while.
One evening, we had dinner at Blue Rock Restaurant.
The relaxed atmosphere and thoughtfully prepared meal made it the perfect ending to a day spent outdoors. I recommend sitting outside weather permitting to enjoy the view of Shelburne Falls.
A Fourth of July to Remember
Our Independence Day started in the best possible way.
Coffee.
A hot tub.
No rush to be anywhere.
Later that morning, we traded relaxation for adventure with a whitewater rafting trip through CrabApple Whitewater.
As someone who spends most of the week behind a laptop or in meetings, it was the perfect reminder that sometimes the best reset comes from doing something completely different.
Frank and the guides were knowledgeable, welcoming, and made the entire experience feel safe, fun, and accessible, whether you're rafting for the first time or returning for another adventure.
It's easy to see why this family-run business has earned such a loyal following.
Ending the Day Well
That evening, we returned to Hinata Retreat for dinner at The Perch.
The setting couldn't have been more peaceful.
After a full day outdoors, sitting down to a beautifully prepared meal while overlooking the surrounding landscape felt like the perfect way to close out the holiday. My husband had the Tagliatelle Bolognese with beef, lamb, and shaved parmesan over fresh pasta. I tried the Miso Glazed Salmon, gluten free, with Szechuan pickles and baby bok choy. A side of rice would have been nice but not strictly the farm-to-table style they went for. They grow vegetables in their on-site garden and the cocktails were great.
Sometimes luxury isn't about extravagance.
It's about having nowhere else you need to be.
My Take
As I've gotten older, I've found myself traveling differently.
I'm less interested in checking destinations off a list and more interested in how a place makes me feel.
This weekend reminded me that restoration doesn't always require a plane ticket or an elaborate itinerary.
Sometimes it's a scenic drive, a charming small town, a hike through the woods, a little adventure, and the space to simply breathe.
If you're looking for a long weekend that blends relaxation, nature, and just enough adventure, I'd happily recommend this corner of Western Massachusetts, at the foothills of the Berkshires.
It's a trip I'd take again.
